Frau schaut in Spiegel

The Hack: Feel stronger, more present, and more convincing – in just two minutes!

Do you have an important meeting, a job interview, or a tricky discussion ahead? Then treat yourself to a Power Boost for your self-confidence – and all without extensive preparation!

The hack is called Power Posing and uses the power of your body language to strengthen your mindset in record time.

Here's how:

Become aware of your body. What is your posture like? What non-verbal signals are you sending (body language, facial expressions, gestures)?

Consciously go into your Power Pose by "opening" your body;

  • Stand up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart, firmly on the ground.

  • Pull your shoulders back and open your chest area.

  • You can either put your hands on your hips or stretch them upwards in a V-shape in a victory pose.

  • Keep your head straight or lift your chin slightly.

  • Breathe deeply and consciously in and out.

Stay in this position for 2 minutes.

What differences do you feel?

What are the benefits for your mental focus?

If you sometimes wish to appear and feel more focused and self-confident, Power Posing is an effective method - whether you need more presence and self-assurance for a presentation or for a personal conversation.

You can make your brain believe that you are self-confident by adopting a self-confident posture. Sharpen your awareness of what your body communicates about you and observe yourself repeatedly: Is your posture open or rather closed? Do you stand tall and firm or hunched and uncertain? Do you take up space or do you non-verbally ask for permission to be there?

Use the next opportunity when you make yourself smaller than you are, and practice Power Posing: pull your shoulders back, stand up straight, and lift your chin.

How does that feel? How do your expression and your language change? Don't forget to breathe and make sure it remains authentic and you feel good.

Additional benefits

Presence: An open, upright body communicates to others: I am focused and I am here because I belong here!

Self-confidence: Strengthen your trust in your abilities and your unique power.

Conscious Shift: Treat yourself to the wonderful feeling that you can influence how secure and self-confident you feel.

Success: Celebrate yourself for every situation in which you manage to break out of old patterns and try something new.

Tips for your Power Posing:

Authentic: Only go as far as feels authentic to you. It's not about dominating others, but about feeling powerful yourself.

Mindful: Connect with your body. What does it tell you about yourself? Can you straighten up a bit and pull your shoulders back slightly? How are you breathing?

Courageous: For an extra kick, you can practice saying "YES!" or "NO!" out loud.

Fake it until you make it: Do a "dry run" from time to time when you're undisturbed. Your body will then adopt a power pose faster when you really need it.

Want to dive deeper into the topic?

Power Posing is a body-centered method that gained recognition through the famous TED Talk by American social psychologist Amy Cuddy. While later studies questioned the long-term effects of Power Posing, there is widespread agreement that an upright, open posture in high-pressure situations can strengthen one's self-confidence and positively influence behavior. You can find the talk on TED and YouTube.
