A journey full of changes
Premenopause: First signs of change
As early as the mid-30s, the female body begins to slowly adjust. The ovaries produce less progesterone, which can lead to the first hormonal imbalances. The result? Small but noticeable changes in the cycle and well-being.
Typical symptoms of premenopause:
Irregular, heavier or longer periods
Headaches & Migraines
Breast tension
Water retention
Mood swings
These changes are often the first signs of a new hormonal phase.

Perimenopause: The roller coaster ride begins
It begins when your estrogen and progesterone levels noticeably change. These hormonal fluctuations can occur as early as four to ten years before your last period. The tricky thing is that there's no set age at which the symptoms start. And they can be so nonspecific that it's easy to dismiss them as stress, fatigue, or simply everyday life.
The signs of perimenopause and menopause are as individual as you are and can include a wide variety of symptoms. 34 different symptoms are listed, some of which occur more frequently than others.

The most common symptoms of perimenopause:
Hot flashes & night sweats – Sudden waves of heat, often accompanied by heavy sweating.
Sleep problems – difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.
Concentration problems (“Brain Fog”) & forgetfulness – Mental exhaustion, difficulty focusing.
Lack of energy & exhaustion – tiredness despite sufficient sleep.
Weight gain – especially in the abdominal area.
Hair loss – Thinning hair, but sometimes also increased hair growth on the face.
Altered libido – Both less and more desire is possible.
Menopause: The turning point
When the egg supply is depleted and the last egg has hatched, the body says goodbye to fertility. The last period, known as menopause, occurs on average around the age of 51. However, it is not considered the final end of your period until 12 months later. The timing is therefore determined retroactively, and your body has long since adjusted to a new hormonal balance.
Postmenopause: The calm after the storm?
After menopause, the so-called postmenopause begins – a phase in which many symptoms subside, but new challenges can also arise. There are a few health aspects you should keep in mind. Estrogen deficiency, for example, can lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.
Possible side effects of the postmenopausal years include:
Dry skin & mucous membranes – Less collagen production can lead to thin skin.
Osteoporosis risk – Bone density decreases, leading to a higher risk of fractures.
Cardiovascular problems – Estrogen had a protective effect on the cardiovascular system.
Vaginal dryness & libido changes – This can affect sexuality.
Joint and muscle pain – inflammation and tension occur more frequently.
