Table of Contents

Your brain is a search engine. The ABC list method helps you focus it on a topic and quickly generate creative ideas – without blockages!

Do you want to know how?

1. Choose your topic

  • Do you want a solution to a problem?
  • Are you looking for creative ideas for a project?
  • Do you need clarity on a decision?

2. Take an A4 sheet of paper and write your topic at the top center

3. Write the alphabet one below the other on the left margin (or use a template).

4. Let your brain run wild

  • What comes to mind spontaneously for each letter?

  • Don't think too long, just write it down!

  • Jump wildly back and forth – order is unimportant.

5. Stop when the flow subsides.
If you notice that you are losing your flow and proceeding analytically, you are done. Alternatively, you can set a time limit of 2-3 minutes to get your creative juices flowing.

NOT important

It's not about finding something for every letter. Instead, you might have several ideas for the same letter.

Why is this exercise effective?

The keyword is "association." As soon as you narrow your focus to a topic and use the ABCs as a framework, your brain's associative network is activated. Like a search engine, it quickly connects, compares, and combines images, words, ideas, experiences, and concepts. ABC lists enable you to mix conscious focus with creative, intuitive action – your subconscious jumps in as an additional valuable source of information, offering new perspectives that you might have completely overlooked with purely analytical thinking.

Tips for implementation

  • Be wild
Let the letters "jump out" at you – what comes to mind spontaneously? Don't go through the alphabet in order – that would disrupt the association process.
  • Don't stop me now
Does one word trigger further associations in you? Be sure to write them down! Keep going as long as new thoughts appear.
  • Time limit
If it's a smaller topic, set a timer for 2 minutes. What all comes to mind in this short time?

Questions & Answers

How exactly does the ABC list method work – and why does it help against creative blocks?

The ABC list uses the alphabet as a creative structure: you write the topic of your choice at the top of a sheet, list the ABCs on the left, and note down spontaneous terms or ideas that come to mind for each letter. This tricks your brain: Instead of thinking in circles, you stimulate your associative network – your brain becomes an idea search engine. The key? No judgment, no perfectionism. Just let it flow! This way, you bypass thought blocks and discover solutions that you might have missed during normal brooding.

What if nothing comes to mind for some letters? Is that a sign that I'm "not creative"?

Not at all! The method is not meant to "work through" every letter, but to get the thought process going. If you don't find anything for some letters – no big deal. Often, you'll have several ideas for others. That's the magic: you can jump, combine, associate. Creativity is not a ruler – it's a wild dance. And the ABC list is your dance floor.

When and for what can I use ABC lists?

Whenever you're looking for clarity, ideas, or solutions! Whether you're starting a new project, trying to crack a problem, or simply need inspiration – the method adapts to your goal. You can use it for business topics, life decisions, creative writing processes, or even for self-reflection. With a little practice, it becomes your go-to tool for fast, focused thinking with a fun factor.
